What is the muting function of a safety light curtain?
This page will explain what muting means, how it works, what components are involved, practical design considerations, and safety rules you must follow.
Step | What Happens | ||
Trigger | Muting sensors detect material entering in the correct position.
Verification | The system checks a series of conditions: which sensors are broken, in what order, and whether the sequence matches expected pattern.
Time Window | There is a fixed allowable time during which muting is active. If the material does not pass within this window, the system returns to full protection.
Indicator | Many systems provide a visible / audible indicator (light, lamp) showing “muting active.”
Return to Protection | Once material passes (or time window ends), the light curtain returns to full safety-mode, detecting any interruption (including personnel). |
